After recent rain the excellent Bank of England pitch had a bit more
moisture in it than usual and after winning the toss I still decided to bat as there was the prospect of a long afternoon
at the crease as we were playing a timed game. Matt and Mike Berry opened and scored some quick runs getting 8 and 17
respectively. John Bishop came to the crease in the 4th over and was to remain there until we were all out in the 45th over
for 135 - 35 not out in 112 balls, Geoffrey would have been proud. How John didn't run anybody out until the last ball
defies belief but in the meantime Vijay scored a quickfire 32 but only Chris Mountain (12), after arriving at 4pm, (I
thought it was an evening game doh), made it into double figures - ducks for the debutant Kanani, Gigg, Varghese
(lbw off an inside edge!) and the unlucky Konrad - run out without facing. The Bank had three youngsters who all
bowled extremely well. |

In reply Konrad took a wicket off his last ball - it was never going to get
better than that so I took him off and despite only needing 4 an over it was proving difficult to score boundaries
over the lush outfield. Dan excelled in his seven overs taking 3-13 with Vijay taking an excellent catch at deep mid on
and Roy, Vijay and Vishal chipping in with a wicket each. A sharp run out by yours truly and it was 100-8. However,
despite Mike's best efforts in the penultimate over, two very sharp chances to Dan and Roy in the slips, the Bank's
innings ended at 121-8 off 37 overs so a very decent draw with credit to John for making a game of it. |
