Ken Block Trophy
v DARTFORD HARRIERS, 30 JULY 2003
Superstars won by 150 runs
With great hope a very changed team than expected took to the field to take on the mighty OSD. The weather forecast was bleak but by some miracle the day was warm with just a steady build up of clouds which threatened rain as the day went on. With the Walton brothers crying off in the two days before the match the opening bowling was left to Mark Harris and Jason Marchant. They started well and after their opening spell of six overs between them the score had progressed to 25 for 0. The change in bowling let the batsmen off the leash with the very next over going for an incredible 18 runs. Lack of experienced bowlers was always going to be a problem in this match but the batsmen feeling that scoring was going to be easy got careless and 2 wickets fell in the next 6 overs. The first a mix up resulting in a run out as Sam Coombs hit the stumps from close range with the ball, the second a sharp catch behind the stumps from Alex Cooper from a Sam Coombs delivery.
When Steve Wilson and Andy Pickett came on to bowl things were beginning to look bleak, however some very tidy bowling from them led to only 6 runs coming off their five overs which put some much needed pressure on the batsmen. However this was followed by another loose over from the next bowler which went for 15 runs but was quickly followed by some more pressure with only 5 runs coming off the next three. The pressure told on the batsmen with a neat catch flying to Sam Coombs at cover point from Mike Whitmonds second over. With this wicket falling Mike Whitmond became the first ever Dartford Harrier Select XI player to complete a wicket maiden.
The bowling from this point onwards was very tight with just the occasional lapse. Another two wickets were to fall, Sam Coombs taking another catch at cover point from Jason Marchants bowling and Alex Cooper taking another good catch behind the stumps from Mark Harris's bowling. At the end of their 40 overs OSD Superstars had scored 222 for 5 wickets and there had been a total of 41 extras.
J Marchant 6-0-30-1 [Ed Note: Respectable]
What can anyone say about our batting except inexperienced and hasty. Last year we were all out after 37 overs, this year we only lasted a very poor 14.2 overs, thats 86 balls compared to 222 balls last year. It has to be said that OSD Superstars had brought their top 6 bowlers with them so it was always going to be difficult to score and stay in against their strength attack. Andy Pickett and Sam Coombs opened the batting as they had to get away to race in the evening. Having not faced a fast left arm bowler Andy did well to keep out the first few balls the fifth ball he hit for 4 and the sixth ball saw his stumps flying out off the ground. Stani came in next and immediately showed his intent by taking a single off his first ball unfortunately he only lasted another three before being bowled with only a single to his name. The score at this point was 6 for two wickets.
Mark Murison came to the crease to join Sam Coombs and they stayed there for a short while before Sam was caught behind having scored 6 runs. That bought the middle order in and potentially the two strongest batsmen in the side Mark Harris and Jason Marchant so runs were expected. Mark Harris saw the first ball as a golden opportunity to score and tried to hit it out of the ground only to miss hit it straight into the waiting hands of the mid on fielder - a golden duck. Jason Marchant came out to face the hat trick ball. With the field all surrounding the bat he gloved the ball but thankfully it went past the keeper and landed safely on the ground.
Mark Murison continued to play his shots at one end but Jason Marchant was having problems getting off the mark at the other. He drove three good shots straight at fielders each time. Mark Murison was however the next wicket to go when he was clean bowled for 24 runs. Mike Whitmond and Alex Cooper were both bowled in the same over without scoring, bringing the number nine Steve Wilson in to bat. He immediately got off the mark with a single. Jason Marchant was still having problems he had been hit on the back avoiding a short ball and when a ball came nicely into his slot he hit it cleanly out of the middle of the bat. It shot like a bullet straight into the hands of the square leg fielder. Another zero on the scorecard. With none of the 5,6,7, or 8 batsmen scoring it was left to Steve Wilson to hold the innings together.
He watched as Ian Henderson unluckily inside edged the ball onto his stumps bringing Richard Murison the last man out to the crease. Richard hit two fours on his way to a total of 10 before being caught. Steve Wilson had slashed his way to a wonderful 16 runs not out in a total of 72 all out. There were 11 extras.
