Ken Block Trophy
v DCMS, 24TH AUGUST 2011
NARROW LOSS TO DCMS IN THE DARK!
Superstars 108-8 (Thornton 25ret, Keates 25ret) LOST TO
DCMS 109-5 by 5 wickets.
The one bright day this week, lots of people looking for the last few runs or wickets to qualify for the averages.
Usual issues with 5:30 start meant that toss was replaced by arrangement that we would bat first as we had fewest players on time. Adam arrived just in time to open with Jamie. But we got off to a poor start and were 2 for 2 after 2 overs as both Jamie and Simon hit return catches (despite Jamie's advice to Simon 'dont hit the ball back to the bowler'). Wickets continued to fall cheaply on a slow pitch until Scott and Jez came together for an impressive 6th wicket stand, which confused the opposition as Scott peppered the midwicket boundary and Jez repeatedly drove to mid-off. Both retired after reaching 25 and Steve Meyler (batting 8 as he was last to arrive) and the tail chipped in with a few to reach 108, which was not as many as we would have liked but more than seemed likely when we were 5 down for about 20 (I dont have the book with me to give accurate figures).
In contrast DCMS got off to a good start with a couple of decent openers and were soon above the asking rate, picking off plenty of singles and leg byes. Things turned around as Roy and Harish came on at first and second change. The best of their openers retired and Roy ran out the other by touching a straight drive onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. A new plan: bowling for run outs! So with the advisory committee on fielding encouraging the skipper to set a tighter field we started to exert some pressure, showing what committed fielding can achieve. Roy, Harish and Chris also bowled really well to throttle the run rate back to 6 and over for the last few. Another run out and several near misses helped. Chris finally got a bowler's wicket in the 13th over. When Harish's excellent spell came to an end I came on for the last two from the pavilion end. More bowling for run outs, four in total with Scott the major contributor. They needed 6 off the final over and thanks to a stumping by Jamie we kept it to 4 off first 5 balls. Squeaky time in the gathering gloom and I responded magnificently by.... bowling a wide! Scores tied, one ball left and they scrambled a single despite almost everybody being up and a direct hit from Scott, with the batsman in by inches.
A good come back in each innings proved to be not quite good enough - but an enjoyable game.
