Because of the rubbish conditions (windier than the annual Baked Bean Lover Convention - plus a little bit of occasional rain)
stand-in captain Gaught and DEFRA counterpart Ed Hawker agreed on a 15 overs aside clash to try and ensure a worthwhile game could be completed. We
came second in the toss and batted first. |

Will Walker, returning after the horrible blow to the face on tour, and James Nichols opened up and
batted nicely until James was bowled for 11. There followed a collapse of 7 runs for 5 wickets - it was like England in the 90s. Messers Gaught,
Walker, Anand and Williams fell like dominoes. AT last two batters rebuilt the innings with Jamie (16) and Rick (11) helping us towards a no better
than reasonable total of 78 - with Jez and Chris Mountain sneaking some end of innings runs. |

With the unusual conditions no one really knew how good a total it was but we certainly needed a good
start. Jeremy bowled beauifully for 2-15 and Chris backed him up with 1-13 but it always seemed key that the dangerous Hawker remained not out, eventually
retiring. Now DEFRA were ahead of the rate and just needed one good innings. After one over of bowling Roy injured his hand trying to catch a bullet
at short fine leg which also seemed a key moment as we were a little bit short of bowling. Chris Plume struggled and Superstars were up-against-it.
However Vijay bowled well (1-15) and Roy returned to bowl one more really good over that showed may be he should bowl with a bused hand more (1-9). It
was left to Will to bowl the "odd" last over with 4 required which DEFRA made with two balls to spare. |

Another close finish but this time a loss in a game where the conditions were more memorable than the
game itself. In the end we were probably 10 runs short..... |

Here is a picture of the most noteworthy part of the night, a damaged sightscreen that was blown over
by the wind. Just proves the conditions were crazy! And check out the angle of the trees. |
