TAYLOR, OWEN AND ARANHA WORK OFF DWP
DWP 93 all out (Taylor 4-26, Burki 2-20). LOST TO
Superstars 94-3 (Owen 25ret, Aranha 22no).
Superstars celebrated the second longest day of the year with a match against DWP bathed in glorious sunshine. Barry typically lost the toss and DWP elected to bat first. Despite an early breakthrough from Harish (3-0-19-1) they got off to a quick start, scoring at 7 or 8 an over for the first 8. However, as retirement loomed for both batsmen the scoring rate dropped. Once both had retired Mr. Scarecrow (4-0-26-4) ripped through the middle order, bowling 3 batsmen and getting a sharp catch from Barry behind the stumps, including what would have been a triple wicket maiden if it hadn’t been for a wide (can anyone define jug avoidance?). This success was much to the dismay of Jim who wanted the bowlers to “stick to the plan” and stop the retired batsmen getting back in too early. Jason’s “pies” (2-0-11-1) brought a stumping from Barry, allowing the retired batsmen to return with 6 or 7 overs remaining but some persistent short pitched bowling from Noman (1.2-0-10-2), who was only a couple of overs late in turning up, finished off the innings with DWP all out for 93 with nearly 5 overs still remaining.
Chris “Big Hill” Mountain and Adam “Speno” Spencer got Superstars off to a steady start and kept up with the required rate before both being caught for 9. This brought the Two Jimmies to the wicket, with “Owo” Owen making 26 retired which included some lusty blows to the leg side and a drive between bowler and mid-on which was only matched in class by the pose he held for the (non-existent) photographers. Once Jim retired and James N was caught for 17, DWP’s hopes were raised by Merv’s relaxed approach, scoring only 7 off his first 16 balls. Vijay may have been expecting to provide more pyrotechnics similar to last week’s match but was left to watch from the non-striker’s end as Merv, always the old pro, upped the scoring. In the end it was Vijay (5 not out) who smashed the winning runs with a boundary with 10 balls remaining, with Merv on 22 not out.
An all around solid display from Superstars as they completed their 5th consecutive win over DWP.
