Ken Block Trophy
v EPSOM TAXES, 16TH JULY 2013
MEYLERS COMBINE FOR SUPERSTARS VICTORY
EPSOM TAXES 116-6 (Owen 2-16, S.Meyler 2-28) LOST TO
SUPERSTARS 117-5 (Walker 25ret, Singh 25ret, Smith 25ret, R.Meyler 2no)
In a tribute to Charlie Sheen "comedy" Two and a Half Men the Superstars turned up to Wandgas Sports Ground with nine and a half men - with Rhys Meyler turning out at a venue he'd practiced on many times. I say turned up, we almost had only 8 1/2 as Barry ruined his rail anorak reputation by getting off the train at the wrong stop (Raynes Park) because "it had Park in the name". Oh dear Barry. It had been a hot, sunny day and despite the late start (around 6.45pm) the temperature was still high. In the crowd were Poppy and Henry, as well as various fellas who I suspect spend many a woken hour at the nice bar.
Barry lost the toss and was asked to bowl first. What followed was an excellent team effort on what looked a flat wicket with a rather threadbare bowling attack. Vijay and Alok opened and kept a good economy rate but their openers had set a reasonable platform. Ric and Kamal entered the attack and Epsom tried to increase the rate but both kept it in check. Following them were Steve Meyler, using the force with a superb spell to gain two wickets, and Jim Owen who proved he's not just a master of the quiz with some superb dibbly-dobblies and also taking 2 wickets. Vijay and Alok finished off the innings with 2 tight overs. It had been a good display with Gaught's fluffed catch and a few silly overthrows the only blot on some good fielding to keep Epsom, who looked a decent side, to 116-6 in their 20 overs.
Superstars began badly with Bungle and Kamal both getting ones that kept low and rattled into their stumps. Will and Jim were warned and played forward as much as possible before Jim found yet another bizarre way to get out when looking good. Vijay paid the penalty for playing back and our heroes were 4 down. Will had retired by this point so Ric and Alok were in bat needing to progress at roughly 6-an-over but wickets looked the main issue. Alok hit a 25 which mixed the sublime and the ridculous and Ric accumulated both runs and lives! When Steve Meyler was dismissed yorked and both the previous two men had retired Superstars were two runs short of a victory with an over and a half remaining. At this stage 13 year old Rhys Meyler joined Barry at the wicket. Rhys refused to be intimidated by the likelihood of him being run out and left the ball well before agressively cutting the last ball over the over through backward point for a single. The scores were tied with a over left and Rhys to face. Barry was itching for a run out. Rhys left the first two balls calmly outside the off stump, waiting for a ball he fancied. It came with the 3rd ball when the ball was just outside the off stump and he guided the ball to the left of gully and ran like the wind, Barry made it too and Superstars had won a famous victory.
A memorable victory at a nice ground with a nice bar against a decent bunch of fellas. A highly satisfactory day, the only downside being the tarnished reputation of "Barry Rail Enquiries".
