Ken Block Trophy
v EPSOM TAXES, 9TH MAY 2018
EPSOM THOROUGHBREDS.
The Superstars arrived at the Wandgas Sports Emporium to a chilly evening in comparison to the scorching weather of tour searching for their first win of the season after 3 losses and 1 cancellation. We also fielded two debutants in LAWRIE MORGAN and JACK LOVELL. Barry was later than usual because of a shaft that had cost him a grand- almost as bad as Wayne Rooney's!
Barry lost the toss and on a hard wicket was asked to bat first. PAUL GAUGHT and MATT CONWAY strode to the crease, but trudged back for 1 and 0 respectively. After RICK SMITH was caught (6) our heroes were 9-3 and staring at humiliation. JACK LOVELL (15) and birthday boy AARON HARRIS (6) prevented the kind of embarrassment normally reserved for MPs who dare to disagree with Rupert Murdoch or Paul Dacre, but it was GARY PLAHE who showed impressive resolve and (yeah, you read this right) off side technique (occasionally, let's not go crazy here) to hit 33 (two short of a retirement) ably assisted (as long as that assistance didn't require running 3) by future Honorary President SIR STEVE MEYLER (10 not out). With MARK WILLIAMS (0) and BARRY GIGG (1no) slogging at the end Superstars reached 102 in their 20 overs. Not good, but at 9-3 we'd have taken it.
The two players who didn't bat, debutant LAWRIE MORGAN and in-form KONRAD CHODZKO-ZAJKO opened the bowling and did so with pace, skill and heaps of effort. The result was Lawrie's first Superstars wicket (well caught on the run by Jack for a debut catch) in a spell of 4-0-15-1 while Konrad's 4-1-14-0 was equally impressive. Game well and truly on. JACK LOVELL's spin was introduced and he kept things close with an impressive 4-1-14-2 while MARK WILLIAMS little jerky seamers were respectable 2-0-13-0. The pressure was now on both teams and skipper Gigg turned to reliable options in RICK SMITH and MATT CONWAY. 29 were required off the final four overs and when Gary took a great catch on the boundary in the dark and there was a one short called by the umpire some felt it was may be in our hands. But a few lusty blows and only 5 we're required off the final over, but Rick bowled expertly and one was still required off the final ball. Unfortunately a whack through mid wicket and a strangely loud and aggressive celebration from the Taxes batsman followed. Epsom won by 4 wickets off the final ball, a thriller for the huge crowd.
A good fight back and a cracking match but the first win of 2018 remains elusive.
Team: Gaught, Conway, Smith, Lovell, Plahe, Harris, Meyler, Williams, Gigg, Morgan, Chodzko-Zajko.
