Ken Block Trophy
v FCO, 5TH MAY 2016
SUPERSTARS TWILIGHT SAGA.
Superstars played host for the first time against FCO at Abbey Rec on a sunny evening in Wimbledon. The grounds man was surprisingly early to open the changing rooms, unfortunately, the majority of Superstars were late. Gigg won the toss and elected to bat first, Gaught and R.Smith were sent out to start the day's proceedings in fine form, Gaught playing a solid innings with running being the theme of the day, retiring for 25 off 29 balls, supported by R.Smith with a valuable 11 runs before being caught by the keeper. Anand scored 5 quick runs but fell to FCO's star bowler Gillan. Plahe approached the crease adopting a "Hit out or get out" approach, scoring 26 runs off 19 balls to achieve his first retirement for Superstars. Gigg and Aranha put on a speedy scoring partnership with Gigg uncharacteristically rejecting a run from Aranha,.. both were caught in the field after scoring 18 and 13 runs respectively. Duggan and Will-Jones put on a flurry of runs, Duggan clean bowled for 4 runs Warren scored 7 runs not out with Konrad also not out, Superstars posted a very respectable 141 runs.
Konrad opened the bowling for Superstars with good pace from the start and progressively getting quicker, although there was no wicket taken in his spell, it was a valuable spell of 4 overs, 1 maiden for 19 runs to keep the FCO searching for runs. Anand burst into for aiming for his follow on Hat Trick but the batsman defended ending with bowling figures of 8 runs from 2 overs, R.Smith bowled tight and after several chances in the field, took a wicket with stumping from Gigg. Three FCO batsmen made it to retirement with 29, 28 & 28 respectively in quick succession. Duggan was the pick of the bowlers with a stumping by Gigg and an LBW, with bowling figured of 2 wickets for 20 runs off 3 overs, with daylight dwindling there was a drop off Duggan's bowling which would have secured him a Hat Trick. Aranha returned to the crease for Superstars with the FCO batsmen timing the ball and eager to hit big but it seems retirement has put "The Stallion" off heat with no wickets off 4 overs for 36 runs but we eagerly anticipate his return to form. Plahe bowled 1 wicket for 16 runs off 2 overs towards the death, FCO required 4 to win but with a clean bowled wicket, the enticed prospect of another nail biting victory loomed but the facing batsman nudged the ball away for a FCO victory. Superstars lost by 6 Wickets.
