v GREEN SOX, WED 4 JULY 2012
SUPERSTARS PUT HOLE IN GREEN SOX
Arriving at Chiswick in the unusual situation of having more players than the opposition, Superstars allowed Green Sox to bat first... or did Barry just lose the toss again? We even had Sandeep as a travelling reserve/spectator and did not need him. With a strip on the edge of the square there was a short boundary to protect and Harish opened the bowling with the short boundary to leg; how would it go? He bowled a maiden, followed it up with a wicket maiden and then a third for a terrific spell of controlled, off-stump, medium pace (4-3-4-1). Mountain and Marchant (0-24) gave good support from the other end with the opposition finding it difficult on a wet pitch to hit the ball off the square. Scott (2-13) replaced Harish to good effect and the stranglehold on the Green Sox batting was maintained. Keeping the policy of giving slow bowlers the comfort of the long leg-side, I replaced Jason and took advantage of all that space by bowling a rubbish ball down leg-side for the batsman to scoop to backward square leg, where Barry took his second good catch. Mervyn (1-9) and Chris (in his second spell; 2-13) bowled at the death to help Will complete 3 stumpings and, despite allowing one of the 9 Green Sox to bat twice, we restricted them to 78-8.
Even on a slow pitch we must surely be able to make that total. Doubt crept in as Paul patted a maiden back to the first Green Sox over – perhaps the pitch was even more difficult than we thought. However, as the good ship Bungle dropped anchor, Adam scored more freely and retired on 26, Jim (9) continued his habit of picking up a good ball to get out to and Will made a tidy 17 not out to seal victory with time to spare. Paul was left on 22 not out which on count back took 50 balls – a very British version of T20 batting; Boycott and Tavaré would have been proud.
All in all a comfortable victory against a team which looks like it is still a work under development.
