SUPERSTARS COMEBACK KINGS |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
As the early summer sun warmed Abbey Rec the Superstars boldly
went into bowl against Kings Road. The oppo scored quickly and wickets were, initially, few and far between.
After 3 overs they were 29 for no loss, then 59 off 6, before reaching 114 off 12 for no loss despite the best
efforts of our pace attack (Matt and Gary). We eventually lulled the oppo into a false sense of security
with an excellent diving throw run out by Rob Reeve. After 18 overs they were on 130, when Vijay
bowled their no4 who was on 28, quickly followed by a c&b from Rob Reeve with lightening quick reactions,
with Kings Rd finishing on 145 for 4 at the end of the 20th. After an initial quick start their innings
ended more with a whimper than a bang with a run out on the last ball when one of theirs ran
and the other didn’t. |

Undaunted by such a challenging total and with the
light rapidly fading, the Superstars went into bat knowing they needed to score quickly. However with
openers Warren (2) and Patwel (6) quickly out the Sups found themselves on 20-2 after 4 overs.
We struggled on to 71-2 off 11. Vijay and Barry both retired on 30 and Rob Kinnard made 28 before
being caught, Sups were 104-4 off 15 needing 42 off 30 balls - the run chase was on. Rob Reeve
scores a quick 19 before joining the Barry Gigg club when he was run out. This left Mark and Guy
to see Sups home with 23 needed off 18. Any neutral observer* would categorically state that
they faced the Kings Rd onslaught and kept the scoreboard ticking over with Guy scoring 9
and Mark 4, including a comedy series of over throws that led to them running 3 off barely
a single. With the winning run was a leg bye. All in all a great all round performance from
Superstars with a special mention for Rob Reeves for his exploits with bat, ball and in the field. |

Comedy Moment: The 3 runs from barely a single. The idea that the new stumps were going to be the best part of the game for a long spell. |

Stat: Vijay Anand made his 150th appearence for the club and overtook Tony Whitrod's 3,035 runs to take him to 6th in the all-time career standings. Only Gigg, Conway, Meyler, Gaught and Walker of all the people in the history of the world have scored more for Superstars. |
