Ken Block Trophy
v TfL PIRATES, 6TH JULY 2017
SUPERSTARS PLUNDER WIN OVER PIRATES.
On a beautiful evening at the Rec we took on the Pirates in a 20-20 match. Pirates were short of a couple of sailors, 9 crew in total and batted first.
Tight opening spells by Roy and Harish kept the Pirates in check but with so many bowlers on our team sheet (Aye aye) Captain Barry gave everyone a chance. Pirates kept on plugging away and punished any lose bowling efficiently. Pirates reached 130 for 6 with one of their batsmen retiring on 25. Highlights of our bowling was Gary with figures of 3 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for 2 runs as well as Roy’s opening spell of 3 overs, 2 wickets for 12 runs. We used 8 bowlers, each having at least a couple of overs.
Slow but steady progress was made by Vijay and Darth in reply. Some good bowling from the pirates by their 5 bowlers kept the run rate below a comfortable level. Vijay was bowled on 12 and Diwakar joined Darth to continue the chase, both eventually retiring. After 12 overs, we were 65 for one wicket but with a target of 66 runs still needed off the last eight overs, it wasn’t going to be easy especially with our retirements and new batsmen coming in. Barry made some quick runs, and was joined by Mike D after a couple of quick wickets fell. They continued with the chase, needing 18 of the last two overs, when suddenly a mix up saw both standing in the same crease. Barry did his best to get back to the other end but to no avail, there had clearly been a breakdown in communication (perhaps they should have used semaphore). Guy joined Mike for the remainder of the innings to score the winning runs off the penultimate ball.
We dropped anchor back in the Prince of Wales to enjoy our success. Barry at least didn’t make Mike walk the plank following his dismissal, although things could have been different if we had lost.
