PRINCE'S HEAD
Saturday 14th September, 1.30pm start.
Richmond Green, Richmond.
35 over match. Dodgy pitch.
PRINCES HEAD TO VICTORY
Superstars arrived at a packed Richmond Green for their final game of what has been a tough season, against Prince’s Head. Upon arrival we were met with hundreds of ‘supporters’ on the ground, including some pitched in their deckchairs and one man even taking a nap on the uncovered pitch. [Makes a change from our batsmen doing so - Ed]
Once the crowd had been moved a 1pm start had become a 2pm start and Superstars were asked to bowl first. Konrad and Gary (1-20) opened up with tight bowling and Gary was rewarded by picking up one of the openers for a duck. Prince's 2nd wicket partnership started slowly but picked up some pace as the opening bowler’s came out of the attack. They reached 70 for 1 before Lawrie (2-27) picked up two wickets in an over just before the drinks break, leaving the game in the balance. Duggan came into the attack after the break and picked up a wicket first ball with a good stumping from Barry after the batsman misjudged the pace. Ten overs of spin followed from Duggan and Thomson who kept it very tight, leading to two very good run outs via James Hewlett and Alok. Alok (1-16) and Vijay (1-17) finished off the innings with the opposition trying to hit some late boundaries. Prince’s Head finished their 35 overs on 150 all out following a run out on the last ball. Everyone thought this could be a close game but how wrong we were......
Superstars didn't get off to the greatest of starts with the bat as Vijay (4) and JB (1) were both removed quickly by some strong opening bowling. Barry and James tried to rebuild the innings before Barry left one that hit a pothole and came back about a meter to hit his off stump for 10. This was a sign of things to come as their bowlers started to get the most out of the uneven bounce from the pitch. 12 from Alok and 14 from James (who was unfortunately run out) were the only respectable scores as Superstars saw a batting collapse that England would be proud of. Superstars slumped to 50 for 8 before one last piece of drama when Konrad had one squirt off the pitch and hit him in the head. Luckily the ball missed all major facial features but he was left with a shiner just above his right eye and was forced to retire hurt. Unfortunately, we couldn’t claim Marnus Labuschagne as a like-for-like replacement and we were bowled all out for 58, our lowest total of the season.
A good day out on a lovely ground with a big crowd but a poor batting performance to end the season, leaving Barry looking to recruit some new batsmen over the winter and wishing he could afford Darren Stevens’ match fees.
