On a very pastoral scene at Barnes Common, the teams changed under the chestnut tree with a steam train chugging away in the distance, the team
then located the track - always a difficult job on the Common square. With no boundary markers the surrounding woodland was the boundary and with the toss lost we bowled first under a light
shower and sparkling rainbow. The nature of the track made life difficult for the batsman and Roy 1-16 and Jez 1-19 including a dropped catch by Bungle kept Science in check. Vijay then bowled
a very tight spell 1-5 and Scott as well 0-12 before our masters of spin took over - Mike D took 3-5 and Jason 2-9, there were even two edged catches to me behind the stumps. Science were all
out for 72 off 18.3 overs. |

In reply we started and middled slowly with their skip impressing with 2-5 including taking Matt lbw for another duck and Jim bowled. After 10 overs
we had scored 27. Accompanying Paul in the run chase(!) was debutant James 'nine lives' Nicholls who survived 3 dropped catches and being bowled off a no ball - keen eye Jason spotted an errant
foot on the return crease by the bowler. James eventually made 18 and Scott somehow but not on purpose of course ran out Paul for 19. With 3 overs to go we still required 19 to win but with a
spinner on Scott predictably hit two fours to the midwicket boundary and in the penultimate over I hit a straight four off a full toss so we won with an over to spare. |

Some of us made our way back to the Coach and Horses which fortunately has remained unchanged and is a proper pub. QED. |
