Ken Block Trophy
BANK TOURNAMENT, 11TH JULY 2018
CRICKET CAME HOME.
Superstars arrived at the beautiful Roehampton ground on a scorching hot day for the Bank of England tournament. Confidence was high after Superstars had reached the semi finals after cleverly placing themselves in the "easy side of the draw". Analysts also felt they had the softer semi final when they were drawn against HM Treasury and Cabinet Office but Barry Gigg, in his pre match press conference, refused to agree with any such suggestion - after 30 years of hurt he was wary but Superstars fans were singing merrily about the BoE t20 trophy coming home and Barry's name to a hit by mid 90s girl band 'Be*witched'.
Anyway the match started with Treasury actually having 11 players at the agreed start time so they fielded. Barry set off at a lightning pace (runs not running) but his wicket bought a gradual tumble of wickets with only Jimmy Hall flourishing. Khalid got a few at the end but also turned down runs to hog the strike that didn't seem to work out. 117 seemed 20 or so short, even on the second wicket.
However Alok, Konrad, NJ and Khalid kept things tight but John Bishop (whose performance should earn him a promotion to Archbishop) was the star performer with four wickets. The innings was also notable for people using the phrase "excellent fielding Meyler" as Rhys was playing. In the end Superstars won by 10 runs and qualified for the final.
After the hand shakes with dignitaries and anthems (has the Superstars theme ever been more emotional?) Superstars fielded first with Anand added to the line up. This time the side struggled with the expectation while Bank controlled their nerves to post an imposing 143. The approach was death or glory, and there no glory as we collapsed to a total significantly less than 143. This did allow us to shower before congregating in the bar to watch a minor sporting occasion.
Team: Gigg, Gaught, Hall, Meyler (S), Meyler (R), Singh, Chodzko-Zajko, NJ, Khalid, (Arch)Bishop and Anand (game 2 only).
