Ken Block Trophy
v GREEN SOX, 9TH SEPTEMBER 2018
SUPERSTARS ACHIEVE GREENWASH.
Superstars arrived at the Abbey Rec on a beautiful September Sunday afternoon hoping to beat the improving Green Sox side for a 3rd time this year. Barry didn’t lose the toss and elected to bat.
George Warren got a good yorker early on (1) but Paul Gaught and Vijay Anand rebuilt. You can probably guess who was more aggressive in their 52 partnership until Paul was bowled (12). Their followed a bit of a collapse with Hewlett (2), Vijay (51 retired), Plahe (8) and Hemingway (1) all departing. It was a time for experience and class - luckily Superstars had Duggan (playing as pretty much a specialist batsman after his shoulder injury) and Gigg (hiding at 8 to protect his average as usual). 65 runs later Superstars were in a good position as Duggan was bowled for 28 (a Superstars high). With the slog on Chrissie Frankland (1), Thomson (0) and Konrad (1) played for the team. Vijay returned and hit some big ones before being bowled for 66. Barry was left on 43 not out in a total of 196. A good total on a big ground but plenty of work to do.
Konrad and Gary opened the bowling accurately and were backed up good fielding. Both picked up a wicket but that bought two good batsmen to the crease and there were nerves and some big shots. Chrissie was bowling well and got his reward when James Hemingway caught a good one over his shoulder at mid on. Chris Thomson then had the captain caught (by Chrissie) and Chrissie caught and bowled a sharp chance. There was another good stand until Vijay was called for and he bowled the impressive Jake. Quite rightly Vijay was then removed from the attack with awful figures of 1-1-0-1. James Hemingway took the final two wickets, including the impressive Shyam for 56 to complete an impressive all round Superstars performance (yep, that’s not a typo).
A win by 72 runs (admittedly against 9 players), may be saving our best to (almost) last.
Team: Gigg (c), Gaught, Warren, Anand, Hewlett, Plahe, Duggan, Hemingway, Frankland, Thomson, Chodzko-Zajko.
