Ken Block Trophy
v LEGAL SERVICES COMMISSION, 8TH AUGUST 2013
SUPERSTARS SENTANCE LEGAL SERVICES TO LOSS AS RHYS MEYLER TAKES FIRST EVER WICKET
SUPERSTARS 140-7 (Conway 25ret, Gaught 25ret) BEAT
LEGAL SERVICES 127 all out (Singh 2-15, Keates 2-28, R.Meyler 1-15)
In a cracking match played in a good spirit Superstars took on a Legal Commission side that looked rather similar to the Dodgers one we lined up against on Tuesday. Gaught lost the toss and LC eventually decided to put us in. Superstars started excellently with Matt C retiring for a 13 ball 25 runs, while James Nichols supported him well with 18 before sportingly walking for an edge. Vijay and Jeremy kept the impetus going with some beautiful drives but both were dismissed within 2 balls in the 13th over. This slight panic bought in the experienced Gaught and Abigail, who ran well and hit the odd boundary before Rich looked to increase the run rate (and decrease the running) with a big hit. Paul retired on a uncharacteristically fluent 25 retired. Some magnificent hitting from Alok and some late order slogging/strange running etc by Guy, Roy and Steve got us to exactly 140. It looked par.
Roy and Guy opened the bowling with Matt C taking his new place as keeper. Roy picked up an early wicket but then followed a good stand with one or two big scoring overs. Richard Abigail bowled with lovely flight but it was Jeremy Keates who took a key wicket and once the other batter retired we were able to dry up the runs and chip away at the wickets. Alok bowled wonderfully from the Pavilion End but he was a mere foil for 13 year old Rhys Meyler bowling from the Fullers End. In Rhys' first ever over he took the wicket of the dangerous John Hilary and proved there is some cricketing talent in the family with a good two overs at a key point in the match. It was looking like being a close finish with Vijay and the returning Jez bowling the death overs. Vijay picked up a good wicket which bought the retiree back in (as LC were short of players and one unfortunately injured during the game). With 18 required off the last 2 overs Jez then conceded a 4 and 2 off his first two balls but then he regained his composure and the bails flew and Superstars had won!
A really good game. Credit to everyone. We used 10 batsmen (although I'm not sure if Roy faced a ball) and 7 bowlers and everyone contributed. It was good to see a good turnout in the bar afterwards, including Matt who took a long diversion from the changing room via Barnes Bridge Station to the bar. It was the game that may be we saw the start of great bowling career…..
