Ken Block Trophy
v TILBERG, TUES 31 JULY 2012
A professional victory against new opposition Tilberg (not a Danish brewery).
At a grey Chiswick your 3rd or 4th reserve skipper followed hallowed Superstars tradition and lost the toss. First time opponents Tilberg decided to bat, which was OK as the pitch inspection committee had advised that we should bowl first on a damp, slow pitch. Sandeep opened the bowling and tested stand-in wicketkeeper Jim (and the batsmen) with a bouncer first up and a few leg-side balls before finding his rhythm. However after that the bowling was pretty solid with all six bowlers getting a wicket or two, catches held by Sandeep (2), Adam and Matt and Jim taking a stumping (no prizes for guessing the bowler). Tilberg found it difficult to score many runs on a slow outfield and were restricted to 95 off 20 overs.
Superstars innings had an early setback when Nehal picked out short cover to get a duck but Adam and Matt took advantage of some deep-set fields to run hard and establish a good foundation in ones and twos, both eventually retiring on 25. Good to see Matt returning to form or perhaps just playing sensibly after a difficult start to season. Although Vijay went cheaply and Scott picked up a golden duck pulling his first ball straight at square leg, Jim, Sandeep and Jez saw us home with more than four overs to spare.
