Ken Block Trophy
v TREASURY & CO, 6TH JUNE 2013
HAPLESS FIELDING COSTS SUPERSTARS
Treasury & Cabinet Office 151-1 BEAT
SUPERSTARS 130-8 (Smith 29no, Mountain 28no, Aranha 25ret)
Superstars lost to a good Treasury side at Chiswick on Thursday. But it was the manner of loss that was hardest to take.
On a hard fast wicket and lightnight outfield Paul mananged to win the toss and elect to field, summising that knowing what you chase is an advantage. Treasury, without any player called Slaughter, went about the Superstars bowling with some good shots however the Superstars' fielding was shoddy at best and clown-like at worst. The bowlers did their best with Merv and Roy bowling well but it's difficult to keep running in when your figures are taking such an unneccessary beating. In the end Treasury made 151 for 1 in their 20 overs, the one wicket (inevitably) bowled, from a peach by Roy that clipped the off bail.
Still the total was gettable and Superstars went out keen to atone with a good batting performance. It didn't start well when Conway (struggling to see the ball in the sun*), Gaught (good slip catch from a late cut) and Errol were out with a total of 9 on the board after 4 overs. After that, although we tried manfully to get ourselves back in the game with Rick (29no), Chris M (28no) and Merv (25ret) all giving a good account of themselves and Mike Taylor, back from Chippenham for a guest star appearence, giving some end of the innings entertainment (12) we never really recovered and ended 21 short. It's worth noting we had them scared enough to have 8 or 9 boundary fielders in the later overs though.
One of those days for Superstars. The difference probably was the fielding but it was certainly no disgrace to a good Treasury side.
* The sun, for new Superstars, is a ball of fire in the sky giving light and warmth. It was last seen during a Superstars game in 2010.
Superstars Line Up:
Gaught (capt), Conway, Barnett, Smith, Meyler, Thornton, Mountain, Aranha, Taylor, Harish Kumar, Varghese.
