Ken Block Trophy
v AGRICOLA, 1ST JULY 2008
Superstars fall to a Greek God like performance from Agricola
Agricola 151 all out.
Superstars 93 all out.
Barry lost the toss (I assume, I don't actually know that) and Superstars fielded first. The wicket and outfield were bone-dry and hard and Superstars looked enthusiastic as they strided out, there much encouragement for opening bowler Mike Taylor. This encouragement lasted one ball as the ball sailed for 6. Sandeep "the mathematician" (see earlier match reports) Kumar opened from the other and found the bounce to his liking but the good batting of the DEFRA based outfit opening batsmen kept him out and cut and edged their way to retirements. After the openers retired Sandeep was able to take two wickets (both bowled) and be involved in a high quality direct hit run out as the batsman strolled to the apparently non-danger end. Sandeep ended with figures of 4-0-26-2. With Mike taking a rest after two eventful overs Noman "Shoaib" Burki raced in and found pace and control (always a surprise for a Superstar!) and deservedly ended with figures of 4-0-15-2, plus also being involved a run out. At this point Superstars had slowed the amazing early pace set by Agricola and James "Jimmy Anderson" Allen-Perry bowled with Noman, bowling equally well and unfortunate not to end up with a wicket in his 4-0-18-0. In the last few overs of slogging and opening batsman returning Mike Taylor returned to finish with 4-0-45-0, while Kevin "Vettori" Eames (2-0-23-0) and Nehal "last over specialist" Bhatt (2-0-17-2) tried their best to contain the slogging. Nehal's wickets came from good catches from Steve "returning from injury" Evison and the mathematician. There was also another run out, that I don't remember (anyone?). The 10 men of Agricola had ended with 151 all out, a good score but a gettable one if Superstars batted well on a fast wicket and outfield.
Paul "German 69" Gaught and Kevin Eames opened up but unfortunately Kevin and then Mark "with a K" Williams were out early to some left arm in-swing. Nehal now joined "German 69" to form possibly the slowest running batting partnership in Superstars history (who would win that race?!?) but who needs pace when you've got skill? They slowly (pun intended) got Superstars into a better position until Paul played a shot more suited to the muppet show and was out for 9. Matt "Captain of Vice" Conway hit some lusty blows but when he was out for 8 and Nehal was out for 20 it left our returning hero Evison and Barry "poor at tossing" Gigg a near impossible run rate. Steve was bowled in the chase which bought Noman to the crease. After hitting one four Barry decided to take on a crazy run and Noman was run out for 4, not the first or last person to be on the receiving end of a crazy run from Barry! Sandeep joined Barry and hit some big shots as well as making it clear Barry wasn't getting a second run out victim! Sandeep was caught for 10, Mike Taylor was run out for 3 and Barry was the last wicket to go for 20. That left James Allen-Perry unbeaten on an average improving 1 not out. 93 all out for Superstars and a poor batting display in all honesty.
Team: Barry Gigg, Paul Gaught, Kevin Eames, Mark Williams, Nehal Bhatt, Matt Conway, Steve Evison, Noman Burki, Sandeep Kumar, Mike Taylor, James Allen-Perry.
