v DARTFORD HARRIERS, 10 AUG 2011
SUPERSTARS SHOOT DOWN HARRIERS
Superstars 245-4 (Spencer 52ret, Gaught 51ret, Gundry 48, Davey 38) BEAT
Dartford 129-9 (Mountain 2-9, Varghese 2-19, Gigg 3ct) by 116 runs.
Superstars arrived at the ground to find a stylish new pavilion had replaced the gazebo of previous years, with the spectators delighted to see a nice veranda area to shade from the hazy sunshine. Barry duly lost the toss and Jason elected to bowl on a rather uneven looking wicket but fast outfield.
Gaught and Spencer opened and despite it being tough work gave the team a solid base with a 100 stand before both retired (51 and 52 respectively). Conway and Daryl Lloyd replaced them and looked to up the scoring rate, but both fell to impressive looking youngsters (Jassar and Ayaz) for 15 and 14 respectively. Colin Davey and Simon Gundry continued to quicken the pace, both scoring at better than a run a ball, before they were out in the final stages for 38 and 48 (some severe jug avoidance from Simon, the committee will have to sit on that issue). Chris Mountain ended on typically perky 13 not out. Superstars had moved through the gears nicely against some good bowling, especially a couple of the youngsters who Superstars will be trying to "tap up", and made 245 in their 40 overs.
After another top tea from Mrs Marchant and Amanda (thanks you again!) followed, including various lovely fruit pies, the players reluctantly returned to field possibly less ready for action than before!
Superstars opened the bowling with Roy Varghese and Ian Moxon and after 9 balls of the innings both had a wicket, both were caught behind in classic fashion by Gigg. Both bowled well with Roy looking a yard quicker than usual (was it fruit pie power Roy?). When Roy got the third wicket, caught off steepling a top edge by Gigg, Superstars were in control although Jason was still eyeing a famous victory. Mike Taylor and Chris Mountain were next to bowl in a dual left arm attack. Mike was unlucky when Adam dropped a catch off his bowling but Adam quickly recovered to catch Jason with a top full length diving catch off Mike - with Mike celebrating by kissing the Superstars badge as Jason left the wicket. The young and talented middle order of Harriers battled hard but Chris dismissed the dangerous looking Jaasir, caught off a skier by Matt after a loud confident shout. Chris also dismissed Ayaaz who was unfortunate to hit the ball onto his stumps. Harris Jr and Cooper then provided an excellent partnership of 40 hard earned runs, frustrating the likes of Taylor, Mountain, Conway and Gundry before Simon sneaked a quick one through Cooper's solid defence. The game meandered to a very enjoyable finish with Lloyd and Spencer bowling tightly, while Davey (bowled) and the now hobbling Gaught (caught & bowled) took wickets. The Harriers finished on 129 for 9, with Harris Jr unbeaten on a very creditable 15, with Gaught especially enjoying the youngster's determined style (he batted for a wonderful 26 overs) and Aymun getting a second bat and being 11 not out.
A very enjoyable sunny day in which Superstars had too much for the Harriers, but their youthful side can only improve whereas our rather elderly one can only get worse! We are worried for the future. Thanks to Penny and Mary for their support and to Jason for his organisation of the game and we hope to sign a few of the youngsters for next year - Jason get on the case!
