Another season to report on but this time no Barth and only fleeting sightings of Andy and Mike Kam.
But with Siva playing cricket on virtually every day of the week he more than made up for them. We also also had another nearly new
player, well a slim line Tom. The tour was again very successful, played in some wonderful settings. It also proved Neil Benn's
swansong for the season, hopefully we will see him recover his zest for the game next season, well he is a Yorkshireman after all. |

A pretty good season for the skip with the new shared! bat and there were also fifties for Paul,
Jonty, Matt and Terry. Mike T also performed particularly well with the bat when asked to play up the order, he also pipped Ken
for the catching award despite uncharacteristic drops. Siva was always aggressive with the bat but conversely Tony showed
that he is mellowing, well just a bit, with his patient batting throughout the year. Tim made some good progress and Stevie
always threatened to score but rarely did. Jonty had the weight of captaincy on his shoulders on the days when I
couldn't make it. Some people have suggested I pick my games but to me the ones against BOCS and DSS are the true test of
a player's ability. Sorry Jonty but I have noticed that in the 18 games I played in we only lost 3, but in the other 9 games
we only won 4 of them, lies and statistics come to mind. |

With Ken and Phil vying for bowler of the year it was only natural for Tony to sneak
past them in the last game, must be the fact that in most games Tony was very fresh as he often only made it for
the second innings. Paul obviously had a good close season but his timing was slightly out, so causing him to miss the
last few games. At least he took on the responsibility of Treasurerfor which I am at least very grateful. As good an
all rounder as Paul is he cannot, of course, compete with that man Carter who proved that it takes something other
than talent to be classified as the clubs premier all rounder! Siva produced flashes of his talent with the ball
and was always willing to bowl even when he could barely pick it up - also an enthusiastic appealer even when fielding
at square leg. |

One player who we will definitely miss next season is Terry, a great person to have
on your side with a wonderful eye for the ball, whether batting or wicketkeeping + that sensational one handed catch at
Regents Park. His friendly banter with the opposition and erudite discussions on the rules (laws? - Website Ed) of play
with Sian are much to be admired. Perhaps the old so-and-so will arrange a tour for us in the States come the year 2000. |

The games of the season both turned out to be those against Dodgers. After a delayed
start in the six a side semi final, due to some fat block (sic) lying on the strip for over an hour, Dodgers rattled
up a big score. Despite always suicidial running by us we managed to pass their total with a ball to spare, aided it
must be said by some inept fielding. A very enjoyable champagne evening was had by all in the pub afterwards - Adey
eat your heart out. In the final game against against Dodgers they wheeled in a Departmental player, Paul Stimson,
who seemed to take a liking to Mike's bowling and Steve's catching; a great century nevertheless in under 15 overs. We
ended up having to chase around 220 and Dodgers looked confident but everyone chipped in with a few runs and we even
managed to win with a few overs to spare. Better luck next season John. |

Thanks to you all for making my life easy as captain, accepting my decisions
without complaint - well I can always dream. Good luck to Terry and Ros and I'll see the rest of you all next year. |
