A lovely batsman and a lovely man (we won't say which of these attributes we appreciate more - other than to note the fact that you can't score any runs in the bar), Mark 'not Jimmy but quite good looking' Anderson is a relatively recent and very welcome addition to the Superstars ranks.
Mark's appearances have unfortunately been limited so far by the demands of his job servicing ministers' needs in the House of Lords. So we have sadly seen less of his stylish strokemaking in the upper order and more of him stroking ermine robes in the upper chamber. However it is to be hoped that his recent move to a new role at the Treasury will mean he has more time to devote to the Superstars cause in 2017, knocking off deficits of runs in the evening while he works on reducing the national debt by day.
But even when his availability is poor, he's one of those annoying buggers who can turn up for the first time in weeks, without any practice or form behind him, have a quick look at the bowling and bang out an even quicker 25 retired. Even worse, he does it playing proper cricket shots straight out of the MCC coaching manual. A whippet between the wickets, Mark has also been known to not just have lapped his more mature teammates at times but to have completed a two before some non-strikers have even set off. But he never gets even the merest trace of a grump on about it.
Mark is also a most unusual Superstar in that he is one of very few team members who can actually field - being quick to move towards the ball and reliable in catching it, sometimes even at the same time. He's probably also grade 8 on the piano and fluent in five languages too. In fact, come to think of it, maybe it's for the best if he doesn't turn up too often, he just makes the rest of us look bad.
One of the Superstars "new breed" who will ensure a long and prosperous future for the club - Mark may not yet in any of the club's main stats clubs, but prioritising cricket over silly little things like work and the House of Lords.
