If you look up synonyms of the word eloquent using Microsoft Word you get expressive, fluent, articulate, persuasive, well-expressed, powerful and moving - these are all words that you could associate with Phil "Flower Pot Man" Patten if you were mad and living in a world filled with tea pots and houses made of lemon meringue pie. Phil Patten was for many years the author of the club profiles whereas porn movies get a XXX rating Phil's profile transcripts were at least a XXXXXX rating and that rating would be in bold and in a very large font.
On the field Phil often resembled a flowerpot man because of his big frayed hat and from the way he chased the ball down in the field as if someone was pulling different strings to try to get his legs moving; the only problem being that the strings were attached to his trousers that were nearly always falling down.
Phil's bowling is legendary, not just because he holds the club record for most balls lost in the River Severn when bowling, but because it was often very difficult to get away. On many occasions the opposition batsmen would find the ball somehow picking up pace from the pitch and hitting the bat a lot harder than they could imagine a man with his trousers round his ankles should be able to bowl.
Phil's love for cricket was only overshadowed by his love of the horses, every tour would somehow involve a trip to the races, no matter where we were touring; and then every evening would involve trying to regain his loses from the horses by trying to take Phil McBarron and Darth Meyler (and usually failing) for as much as he could at cards.
Phil was one half of the legendary double act with Steve Carter, who were rarely separated on tour. Think Stadler and Waldorf from the muppets and you're not far off.
Phil was a much liked character in the club that made cricket matches fun for the whole team.
Phil's 222 wickets makes him the third highest wicket taker in the club's history and his bowling average of 15.63 places him in the top 10 of that stat. The 25 catches in 199 matches (itself the 6th highest figure) suggest a long time spent grazing at fine leg. Many may be surprised his batting is currently in 31st place in the all time run scorers for the club with 344 runs.
