SUPERSTARS FAIL TO ACCOUNT FOR TAXES
Superstars began the Post-Barry-Gigg era with a trip to Steve Meyler's locality with a game against old friends Epsom Taxes at the cracking Wandgas Sports Ground. But some things never change and skipper Paul Gaught-Allen, who appeared to be the only one who didn't know he'd been elected captain at the AGM, lost the toss and Superstars were asked to field.
Epsom are always very agressive with the bat and they continued this approach, right from the off. It was hard for the Stars bowlers but some decent ground fielding kept the scoring rate under relative control. There were (and I stress this is not a typo) good catching with Aarron taking a huge steepler in the deep and the skipper taking two decent, sharp chances at short mid wicket. One of those sharp catches was from the bowling of the returning Guy Boubly. There was even a run out as Gary's throw was accurate enough and Rick did the necessary behind the stumps. It was also great to see a wicket for new signing Jubril, whose bowling figures did not reflect his performance and also showed an athletism in the field we've not seen in decades. However despite the efforts of all the bowling attack and some solid fielding Epsom made 174-6, but it never felt the "wheels came off" for Superstars who kept going.
Despite the big total Superstars had a pretty powerful looking top 4 with Matthew, Arun, Aarron and Rick all capable of destroying even the best of attacks. Unfortunaltey only Arun (13) made double figures and so the game petered out as a contest. Jubril made his first runs with the bat for the club and his stand with Gary (24) ensured respectability and was followed by Dan and Gary pushing the total over the 100 landmark before Gary, cleaarly missing some the pre season fitness sessions, faded was essentially dismissed tired. Dan was dismissed off the last ball leaving Konrad (who showed a new found maturity by not reverse sweeping every ball) not out. Superstars ended on 111-8.
It was a good preformance from the Sups, despite the 63 run lost, we'll play worse and win. And the bar must one of, if not the, best we frequent over the season. It's the friends you make along the way....

Gary's fatigue levels when batting caused amusement, he said he considered retiring and there were references to "walking cricket".
